It was designed to host groups with effortless ease. The rooms are generously proportioned, the living spaces convivial, the bedrooms numerous and well distributed. Everyone can enjoy the stay in their own way and find their own place.

A nineteenth-century country house
In the beginning there was a farm: the ferme du Buisson, already recorded in the land registry of 1831. It was on this land that the present château was built in the second quarter of the nineteenth century — red brick with white stone quoins and window surrounds, a tall slate roof pierced with dormers, in the grand tradition of nineteenth-century châteaux, somewhere between classical heritage and the “neo-Louis XIII” taste.
The original main building rises over two storeys beneath its slate roof, its principal façade turned to the south. Its central bay, adorned with an Ionic order, was crowned in the second half of the nineteenth century with a great bell turret, destroyed around 1940. The same period reshaped the house: a corner pavilion was built to the north-west, the west wing added in the early twentieth century was raised by a storey, and the double outdoor staircase was replaced by the terrace we know today.
Around the château, the grounds shelter rare and ancient tree species — a legacy best understood alongside its illustrious neighbour, the Arboretum des Barres, created in 1821 by Philippe-André de Vilmorin just three minutes away, one of the richest tree collections in Europe with 2,600 species.
Le Buisson is one of the eight châteaux recorded at Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois, a village crossed by the canal de Briare — commissioned in 1604 under Henri IV and Sully, completed in 1642, the first summit-level canal in Europe — and which owes its name to a reliquary attributed to Saint Geneviève, kept in the church, heir to a priory founded in the sixth century. A land of water, forests and remarkable trees, of which the château is today one of the loveliest holiday homes.

A peaceful setting, surrounded by nature
For the whole of your stay, the estate is reserved for you alone. No neighbours, no sharing: the place is yours, with the freedom to use every space in your own way.
Outside, the grounds wrap the château in greenery. There you will find:
The place invites rest as much as activity: swimming, reading in the shade, games for everyone, drinks at sunset… There is no set programme, just a setting to make your own.
A house made to be lived in, not looked at
The Château du Buisson is no magazine set piece. It is a large country house designed to welcome groups with simplicity, comfort and independence.
The rooms are large and full of light, with nothing staged. The furniture is chosen for how it is used:
- Solid, generous tables, stackable chairs
- Comfortable sofas, crockery in abundance
- A practical kitchen, with appliances sized for groups
Every detail is about ease: nothing precious, everything made so you can cook together, settle down with a book, dine in numbers and let the children play without worry. This is a house for living in, not for visiting.
A region to discover, should the mood take you
The château sits between the Gâtinais and the Sologne, in quiet countryside that is full of riches. Those who wish to explore will find, close at hand, a wealth of heritage, unspoilt landscapes and plenty of ideas for days out.
A collection of remarkable trees, on the château’s doorstep.
1821: created by Philippe-André de Vilmorin — 2,600 species and nearly 9,250 trees across 35 hectares.
Its faience works and its château-museum of hunting.
1482–1494: the château of Anne de Beaujeu, brick and stone, one of the very first châteaux of the Loire. The faience works, founded in 1821, made “Gien blue” famous.
“The Venice of the Gâtinais”, with its canals and its market.
17th century: 131 bridges and footbridges span its canals — and the praline was born here, in the household of the Duke of Plessis-Praslin.
Eiffel’s handiwork above the Loire.
1890–1896: masonry by the Eiffel company, 662 metres — the world’s longest metal canal bridge until 2003.
A waterside stroll and a historic feat of engineering.
1597: a staircase of locks ordered by Henri IV and Sully, in service for nearly 240 years, listed as a Monument Historique in 1983.
The medieval castle still under construction.
Since 1997: a thirteenth-century castle raised before your eyes using period techniques — skills that served in the rebuilding of Notre-Dame de Paris.
Whether you fancy a quiet walk, a cultural visit or a local market, everything is within easy driving distance.
